Yi
Yi is a ceremonial water vessel used by aristocrats in ancient China for rituals. It first appeared in the mid or late Western Zhou Dynasty (about 2700 years ago) and was most commonly seen in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty. It is oval with a spout on one end and handle on the other and usually has four legs. The early examples were made of bronze. After Han Dynasty, gold, silver, lacquer and jade examples also appeared. Zuozhuan , the 23rd Year of Xigong’s Reign described the use of Yi to wash hands and face as an important preparation for ancient Chinese worship rituals.
